In old times, lots of families cooked their own New Year dinner at home, but now lots of restaurants offer Nian Ye Fan, which give us more options. One exciting thing about this special meal is that you get red envelopes, which are red envelopes filled with money from elder family members (although this also kind of sucks if you are the elder family member). On the same night, all family members stay up late for Chinese New Year’s Day, and fire off lots of fireworks at midnight.
