It’s one of many innovative programs ORT Yigal Alon runs in its mission to provide a unique, holistic approach to learning in order to “raise a thoughtful, successful, and well-behaved generation.” Past trips have included visits to the U.S. and Germany as well as opportunities to cooperate with schools in those countries. Space soon became an issue, though, and the lack of seating ultimately inspired bravery in several of the Chinese students who overcame nerves to begin conversations with the seated Israeli group. The Israeli teenagers were thrilled. Phones with Chinese-English dictionaries and translation programs were pulled out of pockets on both sides as the students finally found the time to explore language and cultural differences in their counterparts. One of many compliments the Israeli students would receive from Chinese staff members throughout the day. When the Israeli students turn came, they too had prepared a performance: a modern hip-hop dance piece. While the Israeli students may have found the idea of studying without adult input unusual, they choreographed and prepared their dance on their own without any adult supervision. The orchestra members were certainly taken with the performance. Swooning whispers of “Oh, so cool! How handsome!” swept around the practice room.
